With hundreds of models on the market, choosing the right electric scooter can quickly feel complicated. Power, range, weight, tyres, brakes, budget: this guide helps you make the right choice, step by step, based on how you ride.
- Motor power
- 250 W to over 3,000 W
- Budget
- From €180 to over €3,000
- Legal guarantee (EU)
- 2 years
- Maximum load
- 100 to 150 kg
Step 1: define how you will use it
Before comparing spec sheets, answer four questions:
- How far do you ride? This determines the range you need.
- Will you need to carry it? If you take the train, the metro or stairs, weight and folding matter.
- On what terrain? Flat streets, hills or trails call for different machines.
- What budget? Good models range from €180 to over €3,000.
Step 2: understand the key specifications
Range
This is the number-one criterion. For a commute, aim for at least 25 to 30 km of advertised range; for leisure rides, 50 km or more. Advertised range is measured under ideal conditions (flat ground, 70 to 75 kg rider, moderate speed): in real-world conditions, expect 20 to 30% less, and more in cold weather. A simple rule: plan a 50% margin on top of what you need. Everything is explained in our guide to electric scooter range.
Motor power
- 250 to 350 W: urban riding on flat ground. Ideal for beginners.
- 500 to 800 W: versatile, comfortable on moderate hills.
- 1,000 to 3,000 W: steep hills and trails, often with dual motors.
- Above 3,000 W: hyper-scooters restricted to private land.
Weight and folding
A 12 to 15 kg scooter is easy to carry. Above 20 kg, stairs become a chore, and powerful models often weigh 25 to 60 kg.
Tyres
- Solid: zero punctures, but a harsher ride. For short trips on smooth roads.
- Pneumatic: better grip and more comfort, but a risk of punctures.
- Tubeless: the right compromise, comfortable and less prone to punctures.
- Size: 8.5 inches minimum; 10 inches or more for rough roads.
Brakes
- Electronic / regenerative: a complement, never enough on its own.
- Drum: reliable and low-maintenance, moderate braking.
- Disc: the most effective, essential on fast models.
- Dual braking, front and rear, is strongly recommended.
Suspension
No suspension is acceptable on smooth roads with pneumatic tyres. Front suspension is enough in the city; dual suspension becomes essential on damaged roads or for trips longer than 8 km.
Maximum load
Most models accept 100 to 120 kg, the sturdiest 150 kg. Exceeding it degrades braking and range.
Step 3: set your budget
| Budget | What you get | Example |
|---|---|---|
| €150 to €300 | Urban, 20 to 30 km, 250-350 W | SUNNIGOO N7 (€179.99) |
| €300 to €600 | Versatile, 800 W, 10" wheels | SUNNIGOO N3 MAX (€399.99) |
| €600 to €1,200 | Comfort, suspension, 40 to 55 km | Kaabo Skywalker 10H (€999) |
| €1,200 to €2,500 | Dual motor, off-road | Kaabo Mantis 10 Plus (€1,290) |
| €2,500 and up | Hyper-performance, private land | Dualtron Ultra 2 (€2,999) |
For most adults, the best investment lies between €400 and €1,200: 30 km or more of real-world range, disc brakes and pneumatic or tubeless tyres.
Step 4: check the details
- IP rating: IPX4 minimum for riding in the rain.
- Lighting: built-in headlight and rear light.
- Display and app: speed, battery, settings, updates.
- Warranty: the legal guarantee of conformity is 2 years in the European Union.
Urban or off-road?
In the city, prioritise light weight, quick folding and 25 km of range or more: a 250-350 W model with 8.5-inch tyres is enough. Off-road, aim for 10 to 11-inch tyres, dual suspension and at least 800 W, and accept a higher weight.
