You see them everywhere — on pavements, in cycle lanes, parked outside cafés. Electric scooters are booming, but do they really pay off? Let's do the maths.
- Purchase price
- €300 to €2,000
- Charging
- €1 to €1.50 per month
- Maintenance
- About €50-80/year
- Savings vs car
- €4,000 to €11,000 per year
The real cost of an electric scooter
Purchase price
A quality electric scooter for adults costs between €300 and €2,000. Entry-level models start at €200, but we recommend spending at least €400 for reliability and safety.
Electricity
Charging an electric scooter costs about €0.02 to €0.05 per charge. If you charge every day, that comes to roughly €1 to €1.50 per month. Practically free.
Maintenance
Electric scooters have very few moving parts. Annual maintenance costs:
- Tyre replacement: €20-40/year
- Brake pads: €10-20/year
- Miscellaneous (grips, lights): €10-20/year
- Total: about €50-80/year
Insurance
Allow €50 to €100/year for third-party liability insurance.
Electric scooter vs other transport
vs. Car
| Expense | Car (annual) | Scooter (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase/loan | €3,000-6,000 | €300-2,000 (one-off) |
| Fuel/electricity | €1,500-2,500 | €15-20 |
| Insurance | €800-1,500 | €50-100 |
| Parking | €600-2,400 | €0 |
| Maintenance | €600-1,200 | €50-80 |
| Total | €6,500-13,600 | €415-2,200 |
Savings: €4,000 to €11,000 per year. Even if you keep your car for long journeys, replacing your daily commute with a scooter saves you thousands of euros.
vs. Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt)
A European who uses ride-hailing services every day spends on average €150-300/month. That is €1,800-3,600/year — more than enough to buy a premium scooter from the first month of savings.
vs. Public transport
A monthly pass costs €50-85 in most French cities (€600-1,020/year). A scooter costs about the same in the first year but is almost free afterwards. Plus: no waiting, no delays, door-to-door travel.
Non-financial benefits
- Time saved: No traffic jams, no hunting for parking, no waiting for the bus. An average saving of 15-30 minutes per journey.
- Environmental impact: Zero emissions. A scooter produces about 1/10th of the carbon footprint of an electric car per kilometre.
- Well-being: Fresh air, less stress than sitting in traffic.
- Fun: Let's be honest — riding an electric scooter is fun.
- Independence: No more depending on transport timetables, fuel prices or surge pricing.
When a scooter does NOT pay off
- Your one-way commute is over 20 km (consider an electric bike)
- You live in an area with heavy snowfall
- You need to carry passengers or heavy equipment
- The roads in your town are in very poor condition
Verdict: yes, it pays off
For the vast majority of European city dwellers, an electric scooter is one of the best transport investments in 2026. The figures speak for themselves: even a €1,000 scooter pays for itself in 1 to 3 months compared with commuting by car.
